Summer Tour of Italy 2017
June 17-28, 2017
Join us as we visit the heart of Italy on the 2017 ITATs Summer Tour. You will experience the very best of Italy led by a dedicated group of veteran guides who have a deep understanding of the culture, art and architecture of this beautiful country.
At ITATs we summarize our style of travel with what we call the three A’s: Authentic, Affordable and Awe-Inspiring. We have been leading small group tours to Italy and other areas of Europe for over eleven years. Learn more about us here.
Fly to Rome from CLT or RDU (Saturday, June 17)
Our non-stop overnight flight will depart from Charlotte to Rome on Saturday, June 17th.
Day One: Welcome to Italy, Siena (Sunday, June 18)
Welcome to Italy!
Our flight lands in Rome and afterwards we will hop on our private coach for a relaxing two hour ride to our first destination, Siena. Siena is one of the most alluring and charming cities in all of Tuscany (my travelers tell me “it feels like the Italy you see in postcards”) with much of its architecture and atmosphere preserved from the middle ages. We will spend our first evening with an orientation tour of Siena with a visit to the Campo, which many believe to be the most beautiful piazza in all of Italy, and learn about the world-famous Palio horse race that takes place here each summer.
Day Two: Siena (Monday, June 19)
We will start this morning with a visit to Siena’s spectacular Duomo Cathedral with its black and white marble stripes and famous floors. In addition we will visit the church museum to learn the story of this important structure and it’s history. In the afternoon you will have free time to enjoy Siena. You may choose to take an optional climb up the facciatone, a large tower in the city center, with endless views of the city and the surrounding contryside. We finish the day with our first group dinner where we will sample traditional dishes and wines of Tuscany.
Day Three: Siena and Florence (Tuesday, June 20)
This morning we say goodbye to Siena and make our way to Florence. Florence is known for its extensive collection of Renaissance Masterpieces, wealthy and powerful families, and trade. This is the place that gave the world the genius of Da Vinci and Michelangelo as well as Early Renaissance artists such as Massacio and Giotto. We will check into our Florence hotel, then take an orientation walk around this magnificent city…or as we like to call it, a “Florientation”.
Day Four: Florence (Wednesday, June 21)
This morning we will visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s stunning masterpiece David. This powerful sculpture represents the best of the Renaissance and is an enduring symbol of the city of Florence. Afterwards we will tour Santa Croce, a fascinating local neighborhood and home to one of the historical churches of the city where many famous Florentines (such as Galileo and Michelangelo) are entombed.
The rest of the day and evening is free time to explore Florence. You may want to shop in the famous leather markets or take in one of city’s many beautiful cathedrals.
Day Five: Florence (Thursday, June 22)
Our first stop this morning is the world’s greatest collection of Renaissance art at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. During our tour we will view several masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and the “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli. There will be free time in the afternoon and an optional visit to the Galileo Museum which has a wonderful collection of scientific instruments.
In the evening you can choose the optional climb up to Piazzale Michelangelo to take in spectacular views of Florence and watch the sunset.
Day Six: Florence/Winery/Sorrento (Friday, June 23)
This morning we say our goodbye to Florence and venture into Tuscany for a winery tour. We will enjoy an included light lunch and a hearty sampling of some of the best wines of the region during our visit.
After our tour of wine country we will head down the beautiful Amalfi coast region to Sorrento. After we check into our hotel we will take an orientation walk around the city and then gather for a group dinner to sample some seafood delicacies from the region.
Day Seven: Sorrento/Capri (Saturday, June 24)
Today we will take a boat excursion to the island of Capri where you will have an entire day to explore and relax. We will also experience the tiny village of Anacapri. Here you may choose to take the chairlift to the top of Mt. Solari to see stunning 360 degree views of the island and the Bay of Naples.
The island is also full of great sightseeing and shopping or you can just sit on the beach and enjoy the warm sun. There are small taxis available so you can easily get from place to place.
We will return to Sorrento via boat in the late afternoon. Free evening to shop and enjoy Sorrento and pack for the trip to Rome. Dinner tonight is on your own.
Day Eight: Sorrento to Rome (Sunday, June 25)
After breakfast we will check out of our hotel in Sorrento and head north to the ethereal ruins of Pompeii. Pompeii is a fascinating Roman site with Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. We will spend a few hours digging up the story and history of this once thriving port town.
After we depart Pompeii we will journey to the eternal city of Rome. After checking in to our hotel we will take a walking orientation tour of the city. Highlights include the Spanish Steps and Santa Maria Vittoria Church which contains Bernini’s masterpiece “The Ecstasy of St. Theresa”, Borromini’s Church of the Four Fountains, and more!
Day Nine: Rome (Monday, June 26)
Our tour starts this morning with a walk to the Colosseum where we will discuss the history of this storied building and tour the interior.
After lunch on your own we will walk through the famous Roman Forum to see the Ancient ruins that tell the story of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
After a break in the afternoon we will sample some of the world famous gelato that can only be found in Rome then we will walk to the Pantheon to see one of the best preserved ancient buildings on earth. Afterwards we will walk to the Trevi fountain and throw in coins to assure your return to the Eternal City. Tonight is our final group dinner where we will taste a sampling of the dishes of the Lazio region.
Day Ten: Rome (Tuesday, June 27)
Today we will tour the Vatican Museums and St. Peters where we will see Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel along with Raphael’s Frescoes. St. Peters is one of the largest basilicas in the world and home of Pope Francis. Once inside we will see all of the highlights of the space and afterwards take an optional climb up to the dome for endless views of Rome. You will have free time in the afternoon to explore and shop in Rome. Dinner is on your own. After dinner you may want to spend an evening sitting on the Spanish Steps to soak in the ambiance of this vibrant city.
Enjoy your last night in Italy!
Our tour officially ends this morning after breakfast. Early morning to catch our coach to the Rome airport to depart for home.
